Festival of Homes features functional luxury in Norman, Oklahoma

NORMAN — There is a fireplace in the bathroom. Repeat: There is a fireplace in the bathroom.

“We kind of went over the top with the master bathroom,” said builder Evan Nixon in what could be an understatement.

“Over the top” means a cathedral ceiling, granite counters, a shower the size of a small closet and an actual closet that makes full use of the cathedral ceiling with hanging racks and built-ins lining its walls all the way up.

A door to one side opens up to another, smaller closet with a secret identity: It's also a concrete safe room.

“Most people won't know,” Nixon said, tapping the steel door leading into it, “unless they look at the door.”

Nixon's Riverstone Homes designed and built the home at 2109 Brookhaven Blvd., southwest of W Rock Creek Road and 36th Avenue NW. It is one of two special feature homes in the Festival of Homes, which continues Saturday and Sunday with new homes open to the public in and around Norman and Moore.

Homes in the event, by the Builders Association of South Central Oklahoma and Moore Home Builders Association, are open from 1 to 7 p.m.
