City of Norman Mosquito Control Program Underway

For the health and safety of the community, the City of Norman uses several strategies to help control the mosquito population. The mosquito control program, developed in the 1960s in cooperation with the University of Oklahoma, is designed to collect data, identify species, and control mosquitoes through larvicide application in ponds and creeks in public areas, and through spraying.

Westwood Water Park summer season kicks off Saturday

The Westwood Water Park kicks off its summer season Saturday when the pool opens at 1 p.m. The pool will close earlier this year, on July 31, for construction to begin on the new Westwood Family Aquatic Center, A NORMAN FORWARD project.

Ward 5 Interim Council member Applications Accepted through June 8

On July 5, Council member Lynne Miller will be sworn in as mayor. At that time, a vacancy will be created for Ward 5 council seat. At the May 24 council meeting, the city council appointed a Ward 5 Candidate Selection Committee to meet with interested applicants and make a recommendation of persons to be considered for council appointment until the term expires in 2017.

Sanitation Services Stay on Schedule for Monday

The City of Norman sanitation services will maintain the regular schedule for the Memorial Day holiday on Monday. Sanitation services include commercial and residential curbside waste collection, as well as recycling and yard waste.

Main Street lane closure starts Tuesday

A contractor for the City of Norman will close the westbound outside lane of Main Street between University Boulevard and Lahoma Avenue at 8 a.m. tomorrow, weather permitting, to begin the replacement of the concrete pavement.

Jenkins to Temporarily Close Tuesday Night through Wednesday Morning

Jenkins Avenue between Lindsey Street and Stinson Street will be closed to traffic Tuesday at 11 p.m. and will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The one-night temporary closure allows further progress on a phase of construction of a new parking garage for the University of Oklahoma.

Registration Open for 2016 Summer Sport Camp Series

Registration is open for the Norman Parks and Recreation Department’s 2016 Summer Sports Camp Series for young athletes in Norman and the surrounding communities. The summer sports camps feature coaching and instruction from some of the best coaches in the area. All camps take place at the Whittier Recreation Center at 2000 West Brooks Street.

Outdoor Movie Series at Andrews Park set to start June 3

Norman Parks and Recreation Department’s 2016 Outdoor Movie Series at Andrews Park kicks off on June 3 with “Finding Nemo.” The park is located at 201 W. Daws.

This summer’s other family movies include “Star Wars – The Force Awakens” on June 24; “Minions” on July 15; and “Zootopia” on July 29.

NORMAN FORWARD Monday Meetings Open to the Public

Norman residents are invited to attend meetings on Monday for updates on NORMAN FORWARD. All meetings will be in city hall located at 201 W. Gray.

At 2 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room, the East and Central Library Ad Hoc Group will meet to receive an update on the Central Library design progress.

City of Norman to Host Public Meeting Monday: Public Input Sought for Stormwater Utility Proposed Fee Structures

The City of Norman will host a public meeting Monday at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at city hall, 201 W. Gray. Additional comments are sought prior to the May 24 second reading and consideration of an ordinance that could place the new stormwater utility on the ballot for consideration by voters in August.

Norman Gears Up for Bike Month

The City of Norman invites the community to participate in Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 20 in celebration of May as National Bike Month. Morning group rides will depart from several locations including Moore Norman Technology Center at 7:30 a.m., and at 8 a.m. at Norman Regional Hospital’s Education Center Parking Lot, Norman Regional HealthPlex, and the Murray Case Swim Complex.
