Timeline for completion of new aquatic center past the 2017 season
A new timeline for completion of the $12 million Westwood Family Aquatic Center puts finalization of the project at the end of the 2017 swim season. The project originally targeted a July 1 date for substantial completion, based on cooperative weather conditions. Rain and cold temperatures early in the construction of the project, coupled with recent heavy rains, have pushed completion estimates for the aquatic center to the end of August, past the 2017 summer swim season.
“We had an optimistic completion schedule because we were eager to open the new aquatic center for the community for at least part of the 2017 swim season,” said Jud Foster, City of Norman parks and recreation director. “Unfortunately inclement weather is not predictable and if it occurs at critical times during construction, it can significantly impact and delay a project, as it has for the aquatic center. We are disappointed that we won’t be able to open the new aquatic facilities this season.”
According to Foster, all possible options have been reviewed with the Westwood Ad Hoc Citizens Advisory Group, who agreed with the decision to postpone the opening until the 2018 season.
Foster noted that the City will extend the operating hours of the splash pads at Andrews and Colonial Estates Parks this summer to allow families more water fun time since the aquatic center will not be open. The splash pads will be set up to operate from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day from Memorial Day weekend through September. Discounted 2018 season passes to the new aquatic facility will be offered later this summer.
Other opportunities for Norman residents to swim are at the YMCA Norman and the University of Oklahoma’s Murray Case Sells Swim Complex, both of which offer swim programs and classes for the community. Andy Alligator’s Fun Park also has swimming opportunities available.
The Westwood Family Aquatic Center will include a 50 meter lap pool and diving area with a family slide, a lazy river, two large water slides, zero depth entry family pool, toddler play features, a wet deck with dumping buckets and spray features, shaded seating areas and food concessions.
