Program to begin in 2024
The City of Norman is excited to announce the launch of the City of Norman's Meter Infrastructure Program (MIP). Led by the Norman Utilities Authority, this initiative will modernize our water metering system by enhancing water service and giving you greater control over your water usage. Over the next two years, we will replace existing meters with advanced water meters that wirelessly transmit usage data and service alerts to our utility office! City of Norman utility customers are welcome to frequent this webpage for program information or updates.
How the program works
- Citywide Meter Upgrade: The City will replace or upgrade existing water meters for all customers.
- Communications Network: This advanced water meter upgrade allows for the use of secure devices to wirelessly transmit water usage data to the City’s utility office.
- Customer Experience: The advanced metering system connects with other utility software, enabling customers and staff to access usage data and receive alerts. In the future, a digital portal will empower customers to monitor their water usage, set up notifications, and communicate with the City more efficiently.

- Moving from monthly water reads to daily water reads allows customers to have a more complete and timely look at their water usage, allowing for better management of their consumption patterns.

- Remote meter reading reduces the need for utility vehicle trips, cutting down on carbon emissions. Additionally, digital tools to become available as part of this initiative will help both customers and the City conserve water and reduce costs.
What to Expect During Your Meter Upgrade
Meter upgrades will begin with a limited deployment phase, followed by citywide installation. The City will send a letter to all water utility account holders to inform them about this project prior to installation beginning. The City’s authorized contractor will also send reminder postcards before installers visit given areas and neighborhoods. Each Utiliuse meter installer will drive a clearly marked vehicle, wear a uniform, and carry a valid photo ID. They will leave a door hanger with information once the upgrade is complete.
Important Reminders:
- No Appointment Necessary: If there is an issue, the meter installer will leave a note and return later.
- No Need to Be Present: Meter installers will not enter your home.
- Clear Access: Ensure the area around your meter is clear and accessible for the installer.
- Service Interruption: There will be a brief water service interruption during the upgrade.
- There will be a brief water service interruption as a result of the installation process which should last no longer than 30 minutes. Due to calcium build up that can be found around water meters, running water to clear lines following installation is advised. If an outdoor spigot can be easily located outside of any fences on your property, installers will attempt to run water to clear lines for the customer. If this is not possible, customers are advised to run outdoor spigots to clear lines of any particulates. Indoor faucets may be run as an alternative; running cold water in a bathtub is recommended. Customers may also observe air in their lines at other faucets in the home, which can be resolved by briefly running these faucets.
- Beware: Meter installers will never ask for payment or to enter your home. Please report attempts to do so.
