Safety Town is a unique educational experience for children ages 5 and 6. Held each year during the month of June, Safety Town educates participants on bicycle, street and personal safety. The course also discusses stranger safety, use of 911, and fire safety. Each week-long session is free and consists of five 50-minute classes. Upon completion of the program, each child receives a graduation certificate and the helmet that they wore during safety training.
Safety Town is a partnership between Sooner Mall and the Norman Police Department. The educational experience would not be possible without the following sponsors: Sooner Rotary Club, Al's Bicycles, Image 360, Chick-fil-A, Norman Fire Department, EMSSTAT, and the Norman Traffic and Streets Division.
Safety Town 2021 sessions will be held weekly beginning in June. Registration will open May 1 on the Sooner Mall website.
Sessions for children ages 5 and 6 will be held during the four weeks of June. In addition, special sessions beginning on July 5 have been added for any kids age 7 who did not get the opportunity to participate in Safety Town last year due to the COVID-19 closure.
Safety will remain a priority. Class sizes will be limited to 15 participants this year to allow for adequate social distancing. Due to this reduction, enrollment will fill up quickly.
