Job Description
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., ยง 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Any experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
License and Certifications: Must possess a valid state driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record. CDL Class B required within six months of employment.
Skills: Interpersonal skills necessary to be courteous of fellow employees, citizens, and businesses while performing duties.
Essential Functions: Rides on the back of a truck and picks up trash on an assigned route; manually lifts residential containers; empties container contents into back of truck. Assists Sanitation Worker II as needed to perform tasks as a ground guide when backing and positioning equipment. Operates compactor mechanism on truck by manually pushing lever to start the automatic packing of refuse. Picks up yard trash such as limbs, leaves, and grass bags; slices grass bags with knife and deposits clippings into truck. Observes pick up area to determine whether area is free of refuse and lid is placed on empty cans; cleans refuse from street where spilling has occurred. Operates pickup truck to pick up newspapers from newsprint locations for recycling. Washes, sprays, and deodorizes public street trash containers; repairs and replaces street containers. Interfaces with citizens in person or over the telephone minor complaints or questions; refers citizens to main office regarding bills, inadequate service, or related problems if necessary. Works in a manner safe to the individual and other people; follows safety rules and safe work practices; uses safety equipment as required. Conducts minor maintenance on refuse vehicles including lubricating and adjusting or tightening parts and checking oil and transmission fluid. Uses and maintains all safety equipment and personal protective equipment issue to them as required by OSHA standards. Cleans illegal dump sites; picks up trash on road sides and alleys. Performs janitorial and maintenance duties. May serve as back up driver for residential refuse truck. Performs other related duties as required.
Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail. Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy (25-50 lb.) and heavy (50-75 lb.) trash containers and debris frequently. Work requires continued walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
Working Conditions: Frequent exposure of up to 80% of work time to dirt, dust, extreme weather temperatures, noise, and noxious fumes and odors, and potentially hazardous waste and chemicals.
