Norman officials share update on Lead Service Line Inventory initiative

The City of Norman announced the availability of a local Lead Service Line Inventory in October 2024. The published inventory ensures compliance with recent Lead and Copper Rule Revisions announced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and municipalities nationwide are working to establish systems, procedures and communications to adhere to those revisions. As such action is worked through, the City of Norman appreciates the patience and understanding of residents as staff works to keep drinking water safe for residents. Normanites are encouraged to review the online inventory and sign up to receive relevant information regarding this initiative at Normanok.gov/Norman-News.

Approximately 5,000 letters were sent to City of Norman water utility customers that were identified as having a Lead Water Service Line, Galvanized Requiring Replacement Water Service Line, or Unknown Material Water Service Line at their property, during the week of November 11, 2024. Customers that received notice of an Unknown Material Water Service Line should be aware that this is because the line has not yet been surveyed. It will be surveyed as quickly as possible. With over 40,000 water service connections within Norman, City staff are working diligently and strategically to determine the makeup of all lines but municipal resources are limited. Property owners are welcome to contract with independent, licensed plumbers to determine material and/or replace the private side of service lines should they see fit. Such action, involving the private side of the service line, would be at the owner’s expense. The City of Norman has monitored for lead at homes under the Lead and Copper Rule since its inception, and has never found lead above the action limit, but continues to encourage proactive measures for customers and shares safety knowledge regarding this topic.
