The Norman Police Department (NPD) attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 1300 block of E. Lindsey Street at approximately 1:36 p.m. on Sept. 13. The traffic stop was on a confirmed stolen vehicle. NPD had also received multiple reports of reckless driving behavior by the driver in the vehicle including a report of its involvement in a hit and run collision earlier in the day.
As the officer initiated the traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over. The driver continued into a nearby neighborhood. The driver accelerated and lost control navigating a turn causing the vehicle to collide with a fence in the 600 block of Sunrise Street. The driver then exited the vehicle to run. An officer deployed their taser to stop the driver. The driver, later identified as a 17-year-old female, was then taken into custody. No additional injuries were reported.
The incident concluded on the property of an elementary school. The school was placed on a secure perimeter prior to the collision due to law enforcement activity in the area. No students were involved or injured during the course of the incident, and the school has since returned to normal operations.
The incident remains under investigation.
