Another round of freezing drizzle this morning is causing slick and hazardous road conditions in Norman. City of Norman crews have been treating major intersections, bridges and roads on the primary snow routes. Crews will continue to monitor the weather and perform clearing operations as needed. Drivers should remain aware of the potential for black ice on the road and plan extra time for travel.
Due to icy conditions, trash collection for rural residents with Wednesday service has been delayed until Saturday. Areas affected include:
- All customers south of Alameda Street and east of 84th Street, and
- All customers west of Porter Avenue and North of Rock Creek Road.
All other residents will continue on the regular schedule but should expect delays as drivers take precautions due to slick road conditions.
REMEMBER: During icy conditions, drivers are asked to:
- Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
- Be aware of black ice, which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
- Accelerate and decelerate slowly.
- Do not use cruise control.
- Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow for extra time in reaching destinations.
- Avoid unnecessary travel.
- Keep a bundle of cold-weather gear in your car, such as extra food and water, warm clothing a flashlight, a glass scraper, blankets, medications and more.
