Construction projects adjacent to Griffin Park to provide additional improvements

Two construction projects, to provide general improvements to Griffin Park as part of the voter-approved Norman Forward initiative, are beginning this week along East Robinson Street and 12th Avenue NE adjacent to the park. Both projects will be carried out by Rudy Construction, City of Norman contractor.

ROBINSON STREET WIDENING

A project to add a traffic signal at the existing main entrance to Griffin Park off of Robinson Street and widen Robinson Street to accommodate an eastbound left turn lane at a new entrance to the park has begun. Construction will involve the closure of the eastbound right lane and other intermittent closures to facilitate installation of the signals. Completion is expected in mid-September 2023. 12TH AVENUE NE & HIGH MEADOWS DRIVE WORK

Construction of intersection improvements for 12th Avenue NE and High Meadows Drive will begin 6/1/23. Improvements include widening 12th Avenue NE to include left turn bays for north and southbound direction, replacing the drainage inlet on High Meadows Drive, replacing the traffic signal, and connecting the intersection with the new Griffin Park driveway once completed. This project is in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the agency is funding 80 percent of the $2.04 million construction project. Neighborhood traffic for those residing off of High Meadows between 12th Avenue NE and Northcliff Avenue may be impacted by this project, per the below.

  • The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by mid-July 2023. This phase will require the closing of the northbound right lane of 12th Avenue NE, as well as the eastbound lane of High Meadows Drive off of 12th Avenue NE (those wishing to enter the neighborhood should do from Northcliff Avenue). Travelers will be able to exit the neighborhood from High Meadows Drive onto 12th Avenue NE, but will be restricted to right turns only.
  • The second phase of the project is expected to be complete by mid-August 2023. The westbound-lane of High Meadows Drive in this area, just off of 12th Avenue NE, will be closed during this phase. Travelers will be able to enter onto High Meadows from 12th Avenue NE, but should use Northcliff Avenue to exit the neighborhood.
  • The final phase of the project is expected to be complete by mid-November 2023. It will include the widening of 12th Avenue NE, connecting to the finished driveway into Griffin Park and construction of the connecting sidewalks. High Meadows Drive is expected to be fully accessible by this phase. This phase will include closing the right lane for southbound motorists on 12th Avenue NE.
