NPD to Kickoff Click It or Ticket Enforcement May 24

As the Memorial Day holiday approaches, the Norman Police Department is reminding all drivers of the importance of seat belt usage. The annual ‘Click It or Ticket’ traffic enforcement and education project runs from May 24 to June 6. Aimed at enforcing seat belt use to help keep families safe, the national seat belt campaign aims to increase awareness during the start of the busy travel season.

NPD to Host Police Community Partnership Day on May 8

The Norman Police Department, in partnership with Absolute Data Shredding, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, and Safe Kids Oklahoma will host an event for residents looking to dispose of unwanted documents, prescription drugs, and ammunition. The event will also offer car seat installs and checks to attendees. The NPD Police Community Partnership Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to Noon in the parking lot of Andrews Park at the corner of Daws Street and James Garner Avenue.

Norman Police Investigate Shooting near 58th Ave NE & Robinson

NPD responded to a report of shooting in the area of 58th Avenue NE and Robinson Street on March 28 at approximately 3:15 p.m. The resident reported that their residence had been struck by gunfire and that continued gunfire could be heard outside.

Norman Police to Hold “No Refusal” DUI Checkpoint Friday

The Norman Police Department, in conjunction with the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office, will conduct impaired driving enforcement Friday (March 19) with a “No Refusal” DUI checkpoint.

Norman Animal Welfare Holds Free Adoption Event March 19-20

Norman Animal Welfare is holding a free adoption event this weekend. Adoption fees will be waived March 19-20. All available dogs and cats have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.  Animal adoptions will be by appointment only. Animals available for adoption can be viewed at https://bit.ly/30gUhuX. To schedule an appointment, call 405-292-9736.

Female Adult Revived After Officers Perform Life Saving Measures

The Norman Police Department responded to a report of an overdose at approximately 11:33 p.m. Monday. The caller advised that a female adult had taken an opiate and was unconscious and not breathing. Officers arrived on scene within two minutes locating the female who remained unresponsive and was not breathing inside the residence. Officers performed life saving measures by administering CPR and NARCAN, which revived the female.

Statement regarding Ongoing Evaluation and Assessment of NPD Data

Recent publications reference our data and draw conclusions without analysis. We do not refute the raw information provided on our Open Data Portal. We are concerned, however, with the use of the data in over simplistic ways that tend to inflame emotions rather than inform. Refusing to differentiate, for example, the various types of force (from verbal commands and physical tactics through lethal force) tends to leave the impression that all force is the same and it always ends in tragedy. Policing requires finding a balance between recognizing the impacts institutional bias while also continuing to provide for public safety – including the safety of our marginalized community members.

Norman Police Investigate Suspicious Death

The Norman Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 1400 block of 84th Avenue NE at approximately 8 a.m. Tuesday. Once on scene, officers located one adult male, later identified as 23-year-old Markel McNeil (DOB: 2/5/1998), with a gunshot wound to the head. McNeil was transported by EMSSTAT to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries Thursday. An autopsy report from the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the manner of McNeil’s death to be suspicious in nature.

Norman Police Complete Investigation into Campus Corner Fight

NPD received a report of an assault that occurred inside an establishment in the 700 block of Asp Avenue on February 13 at approximately 11:45 p.m. The completed investigation to the incident was provided to the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office on March 9. Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn reviewed the thorough investigation completed by NPD including investigative reports, videos, witness statements and other documents provided by the investigators and determined no criminal charges are appropriate.
